Dough Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk Heated until warm but not boiling
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened Use fresh butter for best results
  • 3 large eggs Use room-temperature eggs
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Standard packet
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Rounding out the flavors
  • Zest of 1 lemon Brings brightness
  • A dash cinnamon Optional, for cozy spice

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and lemon zest. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, softened butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • Stir until the dough starts to come together and looks glossy in places.
  • Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or braid. Place it in a greased pan or on a baking sheet.
  • Allow it to rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Let cool before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers wrapped in a dish towel at room temperature. For longer storage, slice and freeze. Warm gently to restore softness.
