Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian sausage sweet or hot, casings removed
  • 1 large green bell pepper cored, seeded, and sliced
  • 1 large red bell pepper cored, seeded, and sliced
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes 1 can
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce 1 can
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook for 8–10 minutes, breaking it up until browned.
  • Stir in onion and both bell peppers. Cook for 5–7 minutes until vegetables soften. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15–20 minutes. Stir occasionally and adjust seasoning if needed.

Notes

Serve it over pasta, rice, or tucked into hoagie rolls. Freezer-friendly and great for meal prep. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for best texture.
