  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil Consider substituting with melted coconut oil for a tropical flavor.
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water This creates a moist and tender cake.

For decoration

  • 1 batch buttercream frosting Made with real butter for richness.
  • 1 batch black and white fondant
  • to taste food coloring (black, white, purple)
  • as needed edible decorations E.g., Jack Skellington figures, spider webs.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well mixed.
  • Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until combined and smooth.
  • Stir in boiling water, creating a thin batter.
  • Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks and let cool completely.

Decorating

  • Level the cooled cakes to ensure even stacking.
  • Frost generously with buttercream icing.
  • Cover the cake with black fondant, smoothing it for a polished finish.
  • Create Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie decorations using white fondant and food coloring.
  • Add any additional edible decorations to enhance the spooky theme.

Notes

Serve with coffee or vanilla ice cream. Garnish with powdered sugar or edible decorations. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
