Main Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted Butter, softened Fresh butter enhances flavor.
  • 1 stick Margarine, softened Can be substituted all with butter for a richer taste.
  • 3/4 cup Sugar Adjust sweetness as desired.
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract Can be replaced with almond extract for variation.
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose Flour Sift to ensure even mixing.
  • 1 heaping tsp Baking Powder
  • to taste gel food coloring Optional, for festive colors.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by putting the softened unsalted butter and margarine into an electric mixer. Beat together until the mixture becomes fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the sugar 1/2 cup at a time, alternating with the eggs. Watch the mixture become light and airy, pulling together into a lovely batter.
  • Add the vanilla extract, which gives every bite a little hint of warmth and comfort.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, and baking powder together to help the baking powder activate evenly throughout the dough.
  • With the mixer on low, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture gradually. Be careful not to overwork the dough; it should be smooth and just combined.
  • Chill the dough in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to help the cookies maintain their shape.

Baking

  • Place your baking pan in the fridge to cool down while the dough chills.
  • Load your spritz cookie press according to the instructions and press the cookies onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Add any sprinkles or sanding sugar before baking.
  • Bake at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes, watching for a hint of golden edges.

Serving

  • Gather everyone around the table to share the cookies on a festive plate.

Notes

Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week, or frozen between parchment paper. They improve in flavor after a day.
