Ingredients

  • 500 g kunafa dough (shredded phyllo pastry)
  • 200 g unsalted butter, melted
  • 200 g dark chocolate, chopped or chips
  • 150 g mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 150 g Akkawi cheese optional but recommended
  • 1 cup sugar syrup store-bought or homemade, warm
  • pistachios crushed, for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish.
  • Mix kunafa dough with melted butter until all strands are well coated. Divide into two equal portions.
  • Press one half of the buttered kunafa into the bottom of the baking dish to form an even layer.
  • Evenly sprinkle chopped chocolate, shredded mozzarella, and Akkawi cheese over the base.
  • Cover with the second half of the kunafa dough, pressing gently to seal.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
  • Immediately pour warm sugar syrup over the hot kunafa and let it soak for 5 minutes.
  • Garnish with crushed pistachios. Cut into squares and serve warm.

Notes

For a glam twist, swap in white chocolate or drizzle Nutella instead of using chopped chocolate. Don’t skip the warm syrup—it’s the secret sauce to perfect texture. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days, but please, no microwaves—use the oven or air fryer to keep that crisp alive.
