Ingredients
  

Vegetables

  • 1 large head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Protein

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey You can swap for ground turkey for a lighter option.

Grains

  • 1 cup uncooked rice Use long-grain white rice for the timing in the recipe.

Tomato Sauce

  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 ounces)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounces)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Ensure gluten-free if necessary.

Herbs & Spices

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust salt near the end of cooking.

Optional Additions

  • 1 cup shredded cheese Optional, sprinkle on top during the last 30 minutes.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large crockpot, layer half of the chopped cabbage to create a soft bed.
  • In a bowl, combine the ground beef or turkey, onion, garlic, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, rice, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix until well combined, ensuring the rice is distributed evenly.
  • Spread half of the meat mixture over the cabbage layer and pat down gently.
  • Repeat layering with the remaining cabbage and meat mixture. Top with extra sauce if available.

Cooking

  • Cook on low for 6-8 hours or until the cabbage is tender and rice is cooked.
  • If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese on top during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Serving

  • Serve hot in bowls, enjoy the steam and aroma.
  • Garnish with a dollop of sour cream or fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, consider using lentils and mushrooms instead of meat. Line the crockpot with a slow cooker liner for easier cleanup.
