  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 1-pound loaf of sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese Substitute with Cheddar or Fontina if desired.

  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

Preparation

  • Cook the sausage and onion in a skillet over medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently until browned. Drain excess grease.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sausage mixture, and shredded cheeses. Mix gently to meld flavors.
  • In the same bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
  • Pour the egg custard evenly over the bread mixture, ensuring all pieces are saturated.
  • Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Let the casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.

Serving

  • Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

This casserole pairs well with coffee, fresh fruit, or a light salad. Consider using real butter for better flavor.
