Instructions
Preparation
Cook the sausage and onion in a skillet over medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently until browned. Drain excess grease.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sausage mixture, and shredded cheeses. Mix gently to meld flavors.
In the same bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until smooth.
Pour the egg custard evenly over the bread mixture, ensuring all pieces are saturated.
Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Baking
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Let the casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking.
Bake uncovered for 50-60 minutes, until the top is golden and set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
Serving
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
This casserole pairs well with coffee, fresh fruit, or a light salad. Consider using real butter for better flavor.
