Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
  • 1 Egg (Beaten)
  • 1 medium Onion (Finely diced)
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
  • 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 large Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper.
  • Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Let them rest while you prepare the rich gravy base.

Cooking the Patties

  • In an oven-safe skillet, brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until they are golden. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Making the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté them in butter.
  • Add flour and stir for about 2 minutes, then slowly whisk in the beef broth and cream until the mixture is creamy and glossy.

Baking

  • Nestle the browned patties into the gravy, ensuring they are coated well. Cover the skillet tightly.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 45 minutes. After that, uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the top to brown a bit.
  • Once done, remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve with fluffy mashed potatoes or buttery cornbread to soak up the gravy. A light green salad adds balance. Leftover storage in an airtight container for up to three days. Gently reheat for best flavor.
